As we begin 2012, the power of Citizens are on the rise. From Consumer purchases to Candidates to a whole range of local and global Causes, underestimate its potential at your own peril. At the end of the day, we hold the cards. We make the rules.
Corporations or any entity taking shortcuts, be forewarned. Citizens are increasingly willing and able to shift the balance and make a difference with their pocketbooks, their ballots, and their conscience – often dramatically.
That’s why companies that choose to behave as Citizen brands are also on the rise. By balancing responsibility with rights – by giving and not just taking – they are the ones gaining greater respect, loyalty, and success in a socially-media connected world where everyday, Citizens are asking more and better questions.
You see it across both the political and consumer landscape. In 2011, brands like Bank of America, Netflix, and Verizon incurred the wrath of irate Citizens saying no to ill-conceived policies and had to reverse course. And brands from Starbucks (“Project Jobs”) to Kaiser-Permanente (“Thrive”) to Coca-Cola (“Arctic Home”) and countless others have quickly come to recognize that pro-social behavior – showing their “Citizen-side” – is the new Currency.
Citizen Group was founded on this belief five years ago and it has never been more true. From consumer democracy to political uprisings, this is the modern world in which brands rise and fall, succeed or fail. And given the challenges we face and the opportunities within our grasp, that’s something to rejoice and behold.
Using the tools of Communication, Connectivity, Creativity, Collaboration, and Constructive engagement, Citizens have the power to drive Collective Action and shape a more Civilized, sustainable world.
