Congratulations to BioLite

by Molly Tsongas

After much deliberation, and quite an exciting process, we are pleased to announce that BioLite is this year’s Play It Forward Project winner.

BioLite is changing the world through developing advanced energy products that make cooking with wood as clean, safe and easy as modern fuels while also providing electricity to charge cell phones and LED lights off-grid.

Play It Forward Project is a collaborative effort between Citizen Group and CBS Eco-Media to bring a pro-social and sustainability initiative to life by donating $50,000 in strategic, creative development & production services to the winning entry.

BioLite’s technology is important because around the world, more than three billion people cook on dirty, inefficient indoor fires, emitting toxic gases that lead to two million premature deaths each year. The fires also emit more than one billion tons of CO2, along with methane, nitrous oxide, and black carbon. The BioLite HomeStove dramatically reduces emissions—by up to 95%—and cuts the use of wood fuel in half.

We’re clearly not the only ones to see the potential of this remarkable entrepreneurial company –they’ve been touted by everyone from BusinessWeek to the United Nations.

The BioLite team together has over 30 years of product development experience and holds more than 30 utility patents. Previous clients include OXO, Johnson & Johnson, Hewlett Packard, Nike, Lego, Church and Dwight, Pepsi, GE, Lockheed Martin, Boeing, Motorola, and Bosch. More than 90% of their developed products have gone to market.

For the Play It Forward project, our team will be partnering with BioLite on brand development, website design, and storytelling.  We're looking forward to getting started and bringing this vital technology to market in the U.S. and around the world.

We want to give an honorable mention to The Food Trust – a leading nonprofit organization that is addressing the issues of food access, nutrition and hunger closer to home. While BioLite takes on the issue through disruptive technology, The Food Trust uses the power of the network to provide nutrition education to more than 50,000 children and parents, operate 26 urban farmers’ markets, and support 600 corner stores.

We want to thank everyone who submitted entries to this year’s Play It Forward Project. We’re grateful and humbled by the quality of submissions, from both established and entrepreneurial companies and organizations.

And now, let's play it forward!
